23 januari 2006 (Av Boris Granovskiy) | Is there such a thing as too much snow? | My first winter ski camp with OK Linné was an exciting one. This year the camp took place at the Orsa-Grönklitt ski resort from January 19–22 and involved around 40 Linné club members and friends, as well as tons of snow! |

(Foto: Boris Granovskiy) | After making the 4-hour drive up from Uppsala, we arrived to find beautiful, almost brand-new apartments, each of which featured a big living room, a well-stocked kitchen, great views up the mountain and down the valley from the balconies, a sauna, and even a Jacuzzi that I unfortunately did not get to use.
There was a lot of snow...
After spending Thursday night sleeping and preparing for the day of skiing that waited ahead, we woke up on Friday morning to find breakfast of oatmeal with jam, juice, sandwiches and coffee already waiting, prepared by the breakfast crew.
Food was devoured quickly and mercilessly, as everyone was looking forward to hit the trails. The first ones to leave the cabin and ski down the mountainside to where the ski tracks were supposed to begin were, however, met with an unpleasant surprise: the trails were not groomed and, withBoris about 30 centimeters of new snow, very difficult to ski on.
Several attempts were made to create our own tracks, but the new trails we “groomed” were quickly taken up by crowds of people anxious to ski and so became almost impassable. Although eventually some tracks were set and most of us made the best of the situation, Friday morning’s experience was mostly a disappointing one.
The afternoon ski went a lot better, as the resort’s grooming machine was finally working and some trails were groomed, though the cold (-14C), the wind and almost horizontal snow still made skiing an adventure. Still, brave Linneans headed out into the blizzard, and some stayed out well past sunset, returning just in time for a quick sauna and dinner.
Feeding an apartment of 16 hungry skiers is no small feat, but each cooking group handled its task splendidly, and no one was left with too little to eat! After dinner everyone had some free time, which was spent by some watching TV or talking, by others doing their homework or reading, and by a few others playing games, such as Speedway in one of the cabins and Catching Features in another. For the record, Micke Nordstrom came away from the camp as the (almost) unbeatable unofficial OK Linne Catching Features Champion. (Revenge will come in Spain!)
Trail conditions on Saturday were fantastic, the weather cooperated, and this great day quickly made everyone forget about the problems of the day before. This had to be the most enjoyable day of skiing, both in the morning and in the afternoon, that we had during the camp. Many trails were well-groomed and not very crowded, especially in the evening when the snow was fast and headlamps showed the way through the forest.
When Sunday morning came, it was very sad to have to pack up and leave so soon, after just getting used to the wonderful snow. Still, after eating breakfast, packing, and cleaning the cabins we headed down the mountain for one last ski.
Another beautiful, cold day left us all sore, tired, happy, and sad to go home. This was a great week-end, full of good snow, good skiing and, most importantly, good company! It was so nice to see friendly faces on the trails as we skied along. Thanks to everyone for organizing and participating in the ski camp and for helping make it a great experience! |
